When I get to that step in the bright room with the door in the middle the guy looks back at me and wont respond to any button presses

hardly any randomness to it, if your opponent moves first, you'll lose no matter what you do, vice versa if you move first.

It's impossible because the bucket doesn't move fast enough to go from one side of the screen to the other in the time you need to capture those tricky raindrops.
The keyboard doesn't work, I tried.

Are you paying with trackpad/mouse? If so, playing the game at all is extremely difficult. With keyboard however, catching all the rain is possible. The point of the game is to time your dumps and strategize how to collect more rain. If keyboard isn't working I recommend opening a new tab and coming back to click resume, or download the game on itch.
